Saskatoon Sports Show is on this weekend - Hope to see all our Saskatoon and area fishermen there. Quite the storm today, about 20 cms of snow and lots of wind, my kind of day. Love the winter storms. I am excited to report that we are getting June filled up. There is still room after the 21st but not much.

Good Morning and a Happy Valentine's Day to everyone. I was just checking flights and it seems like there are good prices right now. Especially if you are coming through the mid west. Just yesterday flights from Denver to Saskatoon with United Airlines was just $488.00 return. Anyone interested should check.
The weather has been awesome. But the authorities are still saying that the ice isn't safe for ice fishing, at least in Southern Sask.
Reports are that there is quite a bit of snow at Davin although the temperatures have been milder than usual. We are hoping for an early spring!!

Jan 31, 2012 - how time flys. Seems like we just got home from the camp and I am now making lists and plans for the 2012 season. The bookings are coming in, we are booked from the 10th to the 19th of June and only one cabin from the 1st to the 9th. Things are looking up.
The weather has been incredable. It is -2C today (approx +30F) this weather is to hold for at least two more weeks. It has been mild since around the 20th, what a wonderful break. The RCMP are advising people to stay off the ice, another truck with through over the weekend. I have not heard about the ice at Davin but do know that there is much more snow up there than here. The temperature is mild but not as mild as here. The noon news say it is -17 at Stoney Rapids. Still a nice temp for January.
We did our openhouse at Longmont. There were not as many there as last year but it was a huge success. Congratulations to Skip Diekman from Longmont, he won the fishing trip and will be coming up in the 2012 season.
Irvin has gone back to work, this time in Medicine Hat, Alberta. He says he will not be home until the end of April, must be nice to be needed!!!!!

It is that time of the year again!!!! I can hardly believe that a year has passed and the holiday season is upon us once again. We would like to take this time to wish all our past, present and future clients a very Happy Christmas season. We would also like to wish you all a very Happy and Prosperous 2012.
The weather has been spectacular. It was +6C today - the normal is a high of -14C. These temperatures have been setting records each day. I keep thinking that we will pay for this yet.
Even with the warm weather, Irvin was ice fishing on Sunday. I am not sure how safe it was but none-the-less he was out there. Of course, no fish, but one can't catch a fish without a fishing line!!!!! Can't imagine what he was doing!!! The truth is, Irvin is so spoiled from all the wonderful fishing at Davin that it isn't the same to fish these lakes around here. He says this isn't fishing anyway, it is socializing!!!
We are starting to put things in order to go to Denver for our second Hospitality Night. It will be held on January 6th at Longmont, anyone interested in attending, email for further information. We really need you to attend and please bring your pictures so we can talk over old times and plan for another year.
Irvin and Oscar are planning to attend the ISE show to see what might be new, if anything. Maybe you will run into them there.
We will be doing the Saskatoon Sports and Liesure Show in March, anyone attending, stop by to say "hi".

The weather has been wonderful - a beautiful fall with above average temperatures.
We haven't had much of a report from Davin Lake for awhile. The last we heard was around the 15th of September and the trout were still down due to the warm weather, which is unusual for that time of the year.
Looking back over the year, it was fairly busy. We feel the fishing was the best it has ever been. There were a lot of trophy pike caught and released, also the biggest fish since we have been at Davin was caught and released this year.
Walleye fishing was by far the best we have ever seen but we have to admit that we have found more places to fish for walleye.
And as usual, trout fishing was awesome. Most trout were in the 4 to 5 pound range with the odd exception.
We are getting a lot of enquiries about next year so if things come together, we could have a very busy season. It seems like we have had more interest this fall than we have in the past. It would be a good idea for all our clients to get their dates in place.
We have completed our walkway at Wathaman, other than a few touchups. This will make it a lot easier for our guests and ourselves to transport gear across.
At this time we would like to congratulate all our fisherpersons for their cooperation in our catch and release program. There were a lot of trophy pike caught and released over the 40 inch range with the biggest topping 51.5 inches. WHAT A FISH!!! Must be a daughter of the 8 foot pike! We would like to congratulate Trent Johnston from Saskatoon for catching and releasing her, she will be there for someone to catch next year and will likely be 52.5 inches then. Trent has won a trip back to Davin in 2012. I just spoke to his group and they are getting their dates together as I write this.
We are starting our plans for next year. We will be doing a Hospitality night in Longmont, Co for all our past and present clients from that area. It will be hosted on the 6th of January at the Elks hall in Longmont. If you happen to read this blog, you are invited, please let us know if you plan to attend. Sometimes people get missed so this is an open invitation.
We will also be doing the Sports and Leisure Show in Saskatoon so hope to see all our Saskatchewan clients there.

These are the pictures that should have gone to my post from last night. This is Ed Janca and his son Jeff from Billings, Montana. Ed and Jeff have been coming to Davin for a number of years. They always fish in August and this year the fishing was fabulous. These are only a few pictures that they took. They caught many 40 inch plus pike.

First of all I would like to appologize for being so long between blogs. Things seemed to have gotten away on us.
August was a very exciting month. We had guests from Australia, Virgil Hill brought has close friends up to Davin and we showed them some good Canadian hospitality. Gave them a good tour of Davin Lake and had a lot of fun teaching them how to catch Northern Pike and Lake Trout. Virgil caught and released a 40 inch pike, his wife caught and released a 30 plus inch Pike and the Australian team caught and released a number of 30 plus inch pike.
Rose and Don Luft and boys, past guests of Davin, know the lake quite well and were able to catch a large number of pike over the 40 inch mark. They said Lake Trout fishing was awesome and they had a great time catching them.
Ed and Jeff and Janca made their annual trip to Davin. With their knowledge and good fishing tactics, they were able to catch and release the most pike over 40 inches that they have ever caught.
Our return guests have remarked on the August fishing claiming that this year was the best ever. We are very confident that our catch and released policy has paid off over the last several years. It is really starting to show up now.
Wayne and Joanie Strader drove up to Davin in their new mini motor home. Wayne has been flying his Sesna 180 up to Davin since 1994. He has always kept Davin a secret from his wife, this year she stowed away in the motor home and arrived at Davin Lake - the secret is now out. Joanie manged to out fish Wayne and now Wayne will never hear the end of it!!!! Way to go Joanie. All jokes aside, Wayne and Joanie are very good friends of ours and we truly enjoy their company. We had a wonderful time with them.
We have been very busy with harvest and haven't had a lot of time to sit down and give thought to our Davin Lake business. After harvest we will sum up our year and do a blog, at which time we will announce the Pike Master for 2011.
Harvest has been going quite well. Most of our neighbours have reported above average yealds, the quality is excellent and the weather has cooperated very well. Irvin has combined 4000 thousand acreas and has 2000 thousand left. The weather is to hold so he 'might' be finsihed by next weekend.
Irvin has eyed up all the geese. The fields are white with snow geese and the BIG Canadas are down. Thank goodness Irvin forgot the combination to the gun safe - I refuse to open the safe for him until the crop is off. Once Irvin starts to hunt geese he seems to loose interest in all the important things!!!
I will post pictures later as my internet is so slow tonight that I can not upload any right now.

August 11 - Man how time flys. We have been very busy here at Davin. Irvin had to slip out Friday to attend a two day family reunion at Pleasantdale. That was his first trip to civilization since May 25th. He visited with friends and relatives and celebrated his Mother's 90th AGAIN!!!
Now back to fishing. The fishing has been great. The fish are gaining weight rapidly this time of year and are on a feeding frenxy. Pike fishing is good, a large number of tropy pike have been caught and released. Daylene Wallington caught and released two pike, one 41 and 41 plus. This is the Wallington's annual fishing trip - they have been fishing here the first week of August for the past 5 years. Daylene says that as far as she is concerned the fishing gets better and better each year. Ruth Streeton caught and released a 38 inch pike. (pictures are posted to this blog)
The Straders are back from Oklahoma, this is their second trip this year. They brought another couple with them and they are all having a fabulous time. Joanie Strader is starting to show Wayne how to fish. Her first day out she caught and released a 32 inch pike.
Walleye fishing is still good. There have been quite a number of trophy size walleye caught and released.
Trout fishing is changing. Trout are in transititon so the fishing is hit and miss. People are still having some success.
Oscar Farris, from Denver caught and released a 41 inch pike while fishing for trout. He caught it in 55 feet of water. This is very unusual. Irvin says that the big pike must have been "lost" to have been in that deep of water. Or maybe that is where the 8 foot pike lives!!!!
We were watching the Discovery Chanel, "River Monsters", the other night and they were trying to catch a 12 foot pike. Maybe it is possible as there are 8 foot pike in Davin like the local Natives claim.
The weather has been wonderful and virtually no bugs. Water level has come up and is about average. The temperature of the water is 68F on the surface.

Thursday afternoon at 2:50pm, "a cloud of dust and in rolled the bus"!!! A happy bunch of guests ready for fishing and socializing. After soup and sandwiches, most of the guests went fishing. As usual, the Getties team were the first to hit the lake. The lake was calm, perfect for trout fishing, Mr and Mrs Getties had their limit of trout and were back in camp within one hour.
The Brown team hit the lake with a contest between themselves, "who could catch the biggest fish". Alex was in the lead, catching a 35 inch pike within one hour of fishing. Rachelle kicked butt on day two showing her family how it was done. She caught and released a 36 inch pike. Way to go Rachelle!! Then Alex caught another 36 inch so Rachelle and Alex tied for the Brown contest.
Marcy, our couragous bus driver, caught and released a 41 inch Pike. Pictures included with the Blog.
At the end of the tour there had been a lot of trophy fish caught and released with the largest caught by the Lloydminster team. Braden Hall caught and released a 38 inch pike awarding him with the trip back in 2012. His picture is posted with this blog. CONGRATULATIONS BRADEN!!!!!!
It was a terrific weekend with wonderful weather, great fishing and super company. Pike fishing was excellent, walleye fishing was good. Most guests who wanted to fish walleye, were able to get their limit. The biggest caught and released was 27 inches caught by on of the Brown group. Trout fishing was good except it was a bit windy for "great" trout fishing.
We have set the dates for 2012 - they will be July 26, 27, 28 and 29th. The bus left Davin Lake at 9:00 Sunday morning with happy guests who had made new friends and were able to tell all kinds of fish stories. Everyone was making plans to return next year.

We had a visitor here today, William Mckenzie. Some of you will remember him, he guided here for many years. He was showing us some of the hot spots on the map and was asking us if the spots had changed over the years. During the conversation, he asked if we had ever seen an eight foot Pike in Davin Lake. To our surprise, he said he has seen them here many times. Wes, the owner of the camp back then, claims to have seen many from his airplane and believed there are a special breed of Pike only in Davin Lake. Other locals have seen these huge pike as well, or so they claim. Although there have been many stories of hugh fish that got away, could it have been an eight foot one?? We need your input, could there be 96 inch pike in Davin Lake?????

The good news is - bug season is over. Had a few rains this past week and it looks like it has totally eliminated the horse flys which is a good thing. We have had very few people in camp for the past week or so hence we are getting caught up on many tasks. We are now getting ready for our annual bus tour next weekend.
Went out to check our hot spots for fishing, found pike fishing excellent. Irvin caught and released a 42 inch pike along with a number of others around the 30 inch mark. Had to fish in deeper water due to the warmer water temps.
Walleye fishing is fair. Hook of choice seems to be a rapala.
Trout fishing is fair.
The water level is up a wee bit above average for this time of year. The weather has been sketchy at best and the forcast is for more of the same.
Irvin brought in a couple walleye so that is what is on the menue tonight.

Good evening to you all. The Steve Dixon group from Wathaman are super happy with their 51 and 1/2 inch pike. The pictures they took were on a blackberry and we had no way to put them on my computer so I am waiting for them to email the pictures. The fish was so big they couldn't get it all in one photo so they took two. The photographer backed up so far he almost fell in the water but did get pictures. I will post them as soon as I get them. I only hope I can take them from my email to my blog with little difficulty - I am not computer savvy. I will do my best.
They also caught a 42 inch pike which I have a picture of. The caught a hugh number of trophy pike over the 30 inch range. They have been doing their annual fishing trip to various camps for the last 20 years and are experienced pike fishermen. They claim this was on of the best trips they ever had and say they will definately be back next year.
There is no one here right now - no one at Wathaman either. It is raining and looks like it will stay for awhile. If anyone has the time to come fishing, we have the room to accomodiate.

Nick Hathaway, age 10 form Texax, caught and released a 30 plus inch pike on Wednesday July 6th. Over all fishing has been quite good. Pike fishing excellent, trout fishing excellent and Walleye fish weaker but started to pick up towards the end of the week. Buzz bombs are still the hook of choice for trout. Spoons seem to work for pike and jigs with night crawlers for walleye.

NEWS FLASH

The Steve Dickson group at Wathaman Outpost have just caught and released a 51 and 1/2 inch Northern Pike. Pictures will be posted tomorrow.
It is a beautiful day other than a few thunder heads which causes trouble with the phone. Wayne Strader just reported a fire at Mclellan Lake. The road is closed there due to back burning.
We have had some rain here and the water level is now about average. It has been windy every day for the past week.
I will give a full fishing report tomorrow, when I post the pictures.

Micheal Lindbloom and his team, Matt Wicks, Darryl Hoffman and Micheal Weseen, all of Naicam just left yesterday after a two day fishing trip to Davin. Micheal and his partner, Darryl found a new Walleye hole in Lightle Bay which proved quite successful. Pike fishing was good, Micheal Weseen caught and released a 40 inch Pike. The highlight of the trip for the team was buzz bombing Trout which they had never done before. They were catching the Trout in 50 - 60 feet of water. Micheal Lindbloom caught and released the biggest Trout and according to Monte, Matt Wicks caught and released the smallest one!!!! Here are a few pictures of their trip.

Yesterday, June 24th, Zoltan Deak caught and released a 48 inch Northern Pike during his trip to Wathaman. This puts Zoltan in the lead for the Pike Master of 2011. But there is a lot of season left and we all know some of the biggest fish have been caught in July and August.

Good evening to all. And a beautiful evening it is.
The weather has been super but dry, very little moisture and we do need rain, the lake is low,
Fishing has been wonderful for all three species. The walleye fishing could possibly be the best we have ever seen. The guests have had to release a huge number of trophy walley over 22 inches. Hooks of choice for walleye fishing is Mister Twister and double tailed jigs.
Trout are down now so buzz bombs are the ones to use.
Pike fishing is excellent - a large number of trophy pike have been caught and released. Top water lures seem to be the ones to use right now.
Congraulations to JT Dibble and his group, Jim Myers and Don Gallaher for another outstanding trip to Davin. They caught and released the following JT Pike 40, 31, 32, 32, 31, 33, 32, 34, 31, 42, and Walleye 27, 22, 22. Jim Pike 33, 31, 32, 32, 33, 43, 30, 30, 32, 33, 31, 32 Trout 26, 26, 27, and Walleye 22, 25. Don Pike 41, 31, 31, 36, 30. WOW.
Joe Kalus from Buffalo ,WY caught and released a 44 inch pike. Dennis Evenson from Clear Lake, SD caught and released a 42 inch pike and Staff Polk also from WY caught and released a 34 inch pike. These gentlemen were guests at Wathaman from the 6th to the 11th. I got pictures from them and cannot load them to my blog - sorry guys I will see what I can do when I am out next week.

It seems to have taken a bit longer to do this post. My daughter-in-law was here and I gave her the job of posting on the blog, she typed, I dictated while peeling potatoes. I sure do miss my family, Tenn is so far away.
Irvin is still in hot pursuit of Winnie the Pooh and Ivin holds a terrible grudge. Maybe the bear knows this as there hasn't been an attack since the 6th of June.
The fishing has been outstanding. We have had several 44" pike caught and released, also, there have been many trophy pike between 30 and 40 inches caught and released. Almost every fishermen, to date, has caught and released a trophy pike. Up to now plugs and spooons have been the hooks of choice but will soon be moving onto top water lures.
Oscar and Ray caught and released a 46" pike, according to them!!! But of course, they didn't have a camera along with them. They nearly sawed the paddle off to prove the length - they used the paddle for a measuring stick. Ha Ha Oscar, no free trip for you!!!!!
Walley fishing has started out very slow but seems to be getting better every day as the walleye are moving into the Davin River and other secret places!! Bottom bouncers and lindy rigs with frozen minnows are being used for Walleye fishing. There have been quite a large number of trophy walleye caught and released as well.
The trout fishing has been outstanding, it always is at the start of the season as they are always up. The last two days many small trout have been caught, that means the larger trout have gone down. Get your buzz bombs and other heavy jigs of choice ready.

Our first group of fishermen have come and gone. Everyone had a wonderful time! Aaron White caught and released 4 trophy pike: 31, 32, 36 and 39 inches. His son, Garrett, caught and released 3 trophy pike: 32, 34 and 38 inches. Nicole and Bret Heebner caught and released a 31 inch pike. The fishing has been incredible. Although the weather has been cool at times, the fishermen are still catching and releasing excellent trophy fish!

Spencer Shout, my oldest son, and his family are visiting from Tennessee. Today, he caught and released a 27.5 inch Walleye! When everyone asked where he caught it, he simply replied, "in the lake!"

Spencer's wife and daughter caught and released a 27 inch Lake Trout. There were a lot of pissed off men when the women were razzing them in camp, but the girls still let the men clean the boats. Way to go girls!

Joyce Franko caught and released a 37 inch Lake Trout.

We have been attacked by bears again at Wathaman. They never even went through the doors this time, they just chewed a hole in the wall. It's been quite a remodeling process, but the cabins are ready to go. Irvin says "Winnie the Pooh is going to die!!! And by the way, we are getting close to slammer time."

We left 4:00am Wednesday morning. Had truck trouble so didn`t arrive here till 5:00pm. All was just like we left last fall. So good to see no break-ins or trouble. Ice is off and the weather was in the mid 20`sC. Not so today, there has been a few snow flakes. What a country.
Cabins are ready, lodge is open, working on the boats, two in the water as I write this. We haven`t tried fishing yet but there are a lot of unconfirmed reports of LARGE fish sighted!!! Actually we saw a few trout under the dock as well as white fish.

The pressure is on, crop is in the ground. We just had a great weekend with the Kjelshus family helping Irvin's mom celebrate her 90th birthday. The weather was wonderful, food good and great company. Now it is time to tend to business. We are busy running for supplies for the camp, new tires on the trucks and getting staff in place. A weather check indicates that it is great up north which means the ice should be gone and the ground starting to warm. We will be leaving at 4:00am on Wednesday morning, we expect to arrive at the camp mid-afternoon, providing there isn't any trouble. I will do an update once we have the computer up and running. Stay tuned.

Hello to all our "Fisherman Friends"
At 4:30 yesterday morning we left to check the camp. We took a trailer with lumber to rebuild the portage which burned in the fire last summer. After 2 flat tires we made it to the camp to find it just like we left it last fall.
We saw lots of float planes flying around LaRonge so there must be water open someplace. Lake LaRonge itself was open, the ice was so far out from shore that it was hard to actually see it.
This morning we woke to the call of the loons, I didn't realize how much I missed the camp. It made me realize how lucky we are to have a place like Davin Lake Lodge. The weather was beautiful there with a high of 15C. There was a south breeze which felt very warm. The forecast is for high teens for the next 5 days.
You will all be happy to hear that the ice should be off within the next 7 days or so. It has receded from the shore about 20 feet and has started to turn the black color that happens just before it sinks. The average ice out date is the 20th - should be right on time. The water is lower now than it has been for quite sometime but will rise as the ice leaves and the springs start to run.
The roads to the camp were awesome - the best we have seen them in the past few years. Sure hope they stay that way.
We plan to leave for the camp on the 25th. Our first guests will arrive on the 31st. Hope you all have your dates in place - we still have some openings and are looking forward to a good year.

We are home

Back home after doing our US tour. We left on the 13th of Jan and returned home on the the 31st, a total of 5800 miles. We saw a lot of country and had an amazing time.
First we did the Sports Show in Billings. Had an great time visiting with past and future clients. The weather was cool but nice.
From Billings we went to Ardmore, Ok where I visited with my son and Irvin stayed at Wayne and Joanie Straders. We did an open house at Wayne's which was a huge success and also did an open house in Oklahoma City. Again, it was a good time and had a great visit.
From Oklahoma we went to Fayetteville, Tenn where we spent 4 amazing days with my son and his family. We visited Bass Pro in Nashville as well as a Gander Mountain in Huntsville. Of course those places are a must for Irvin and Spencer. It was great.
From Tenn we went back to Longmont, Co. where we did another open house. We stayed with Oscar and Jayne which was wonderful, as usual and our open house was another great success. Congratulations to Hiedi Chambers who won the all expense paid fishing trip to Davin this summer. Lucky lady, she gets to bring her personal guides!!!! Hiedi is TJ's mom!!!
The weather was wonderful in Denver and just okay for the rest. When we left home it was very cold so what we had was better than here. We had good driving conditions until the trip home. The weather was terrible in Montana with cold temps, snow and high winds. The roads were near blocked going into and leaving Malta.
It is good to be home although it is to turn cold. I don't mind cold at this time of the year, it dosen't seem to last long and there is heat in the sun.
Last report I have, there is a lot of show at Davin and of course it is cold.

We are South bound!!!

To hell with this, we are heading south. Show time!!!! It is -25C with a wind chill it is -37C. Hope things are better South of the 49th.
We are leaving tomorrow morning for Billings, Montana and doing a show there from Friday till Sunday. Then off to Oklahoma where we will be visiting friends and family. We will be doing an open house at Ardmore, Ok on the 21st and in Oklahoma City on the 22nd.
From Oklahoma we are going to Fayetteville, Tenn to visit my son, Spencer and his family then back to Colorado for another open house. The open house will be the evening of the 29th in Longmont.
If anyone is interested email me and I will send all the details. We welcome all to come and visit at any of the open house or at the Billings show.

This is the last day of 2010 and I am reflecting on the past 12 months. Yes, we had another forest fire but all in all it was a great year.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our friends, family, clients and potential clients a very Happy and Prosperous 2011.

Today, Saturday December 18th. Irvin and I are sitting around at our winter home, the farm, watching the birds feeding at the feeder and the deer feeding at a hay bale in the yard. It is snowing a lazy snow, a beautiful day. Today is the last day of draw Elk season and people are now starting to concentrate on ice fishing. We have had some good reports on fishing. Apparently there has been some very good pike, walleye and perch caught already. Be careful out there as there could be pretty thin ice.
Reports have it that there has been massive white tale shot around here this fall. Irvin will be attending the annual horn measuring to check it out. Will let you know if and when I find out.

Fall Update

Good Morning to all. This being our slow season, the only report I can give is the weather situation. At last contact, we have a huge amount of snow at Davin already. This is a good thing due to the dry season last year.
Irvin made his fall trip to the camp and did some fishing. Trout fishing was awesome - he had to learn to fish for pike differently. Huskey Jerk was the hook of choice for late October, 2010. Of course that could be different next year.
